An Obo Manobo folk tale in Bisaya, with English translation
Kani si Tuwaang, tao jod na siya. Ang lugar nga gipuy-an niya dri sa Arakan Valley. May abyan na siya nga gitawag nga anito. Kani iyang anito, gamhanan kaysa uban nga anito. Ug siya gitawag nga bahani. Kanang manggugubat gani, daghan ni siyag napatay. Ug wa gyoy makalabaw sa iya.
Unya sa kadugayan nga panahon, gusto sa iyang abyan nga anito, nga pasakaon na siya paingon sa langit. Daghan siyag mga kauban. Pamilya niya, mga igsoon, mga bayaw niya. Pero kinahanglan na kanang iyang batasan sinsero jod kaayo nga walay bisan unsa pa nga hunahunaon. Pati sa mga panginabuhi nga kalibotanon kay dili makapahinunob sa gingharian sa langit. Mao na iyang mensahe.

I you call pagan,
you say pagan is bad people.
You say you is Christian
and Christian is good people.
You laugh I kneel on big rock
or I pray before big tree.
You angry I call Migbaya,
you say my God is devil.
I not laugh you kneel on dead tree
or you pray to hanging God there.
I not angry you call your God,
and I not call Him devil.
I angry you get my lands,
I angry you get my golds,
I angry you burn my wood books,
but you say I should love enemy.
You say love enemy
but you killed grandpa baylan,
you killed grandma bae,
you killed uncle bagani,
you killed even dog talamuod.

get shot:
the tiger
stalking your soul
demands the lead
aimed at your head.
hedge long enough
and the claws
buckle under the weight
of jealousy heavy
as any hunter’s boots.
growl,
leave paw marks in
and out of this jungle
bearing fear like fruits.
love can pull
triggers.

Wala nahimutang si Francis samtang naglakaw padulong sa ilang balay. Naglantugi ang iyang hunahuna kon mopadayon ba siyag uli o dili. Gipaningot siyag taman sa kakulba. Bisag naa nay iyang namugnang palusot, wala gihapon mahuwas ang iyang gibating kahadlok.Sa iyang paminaw, mora siyag malipong. Kusog kaayo ang pitik sa iyang kabuhi.
Isip usa ka sundalo, grabe modisiplina si Nong Ernesto kanila – ligas paka ang balaod niini sa balay. Nakatilaw na siya kausa sa kasalbahis niini. Wala kadto sila kaulig sayo kuyog sa iyang Kuya Joel nanan-awg amatyur sa plasa. Mao nga pag-uli, grabeg pangasaba ug latos ang ilang nadawat. Nasunggo intawn ang iyang maguwang pagkaigo sa kusog nga kinumo sa amahan.

“Fractional Lives” is a collection of Margarita Marfori’s short fiction. The collection spans her writing career, dating back to her first published story in 1995 to new previously unpublished fiction. Marfori’s quiet, emotional stories reveal vulnerable characters struggling with alienation and personal anguish.
“The Best of Dagmay” is an anthology of the best works of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and drama appearing between 2007 and 2009 in Dagmay, the weekly literary journal of the Davao Writers Guild. Appearing as a weekly insert and online, Dagmay has published works from hundreds of Mindanao writers. This book compiles 97 pieces from 77 young authors.
