Setting: A café at a mall—one table with a seat for the main character and another empty chair. Mellow instrumental music plays at the background.

The scene begins with Carlota coming into the coffee shop. She puts her things on a table in a corner – her handbag, tracing paper tube, and laptop – and fixes herself up. She is wearing a pair of blue jeans, polo shirt, eyeglasses, a wristwatch, and rubber shoes.

Carlota: Waiter! One cappuccino with whipped cream, please. Wala? O sige, iced skinny mocha with extra coffee jelly. Wala din? Espresso na nga lang.

Afya

Editor’s Note: In celebration of International Women’s Month, Dagmay is featuring a series of monologues about the status of women in Davao. These are creative works based on interviews with real women.

Character:

Afya: 18 year-old attractive woman. Wears hijab and loose clothes.

Setting: Inside a bedroom with an electric fan.

(A male voice is overheard) “Afya ha, dito ka lang talaga yan sa bahay. Hindi na maglabas muna. Basta, bantay ka lang talaga kapag makita na naman kita yan sa labas kasama yun si Tarhatta! Afya ha?”

(No one answers. Then Afya enters and slams the door.)

(male voiceover): “Afya?! Afya! Tai babuy Ini! Afya!”

AFYA: (shouting) Owai ba Ama! Hindi lagi ako mag labas-labas uy!

(muttering to self) Sige na lang balik-balik uy. Hindi lagi ako maglabas ba. Hindi lagi uy. Kahit gud gusto ko gud magpunta doon sa kaibigan ko kay manood kami nitong No Other Woman ba. Kinuha ko pa naman ito sa pwesto ni Ina kahapon sa palengke. Buti na lang kay nag- alis si Ina kay mag sambahayang siya nung tanghali na yun. Ako na lang muna gipabantay niya kaya yun, nakuha ko tong DVD. Gidugo man gud ako nun ba. Hindi pa talaga sana yun siya maniwala. Saka na siya naniwala nung nakita niya na nalapsan ako. Pero pag wala ako giregla nun, ngek! Pilitin ako mag sambahayang ba!

Ma’am Jen – Ang guro na hinahangaan ng mga nasa Kolehiyo de San Ignacio. Di lamang maganda kundi matalino, magaling magturo, at maaruga sa mga tao.

Art – Isang 3rd year student ng Kolehiyo de San Ignacio.

Kaklase 1 – isang kaklase ni Art. Isang lalake.

Kakase 2 – isang kaklase ni Art. Isang babae.

Dr. Xion – Ang chemistry teacher ng mga 3rd year students sa Kolehiyo de San Ignacio.

Pagsasadula:

      (Closed Curtains)

Narrator: Ang pag-ibig ay walang pinipiling lugar, oras, panahon, kasarian, edad, etsetera, etsetera. Wala!

Narrator: Ehem…

Narrator: Ngunit, wala rin itong pinapaboran. At kung minsan pa’y nakikipaglaro sa tadhana ng tao.

Ely, 27 years old, a mob member, the right hand of the boss of a mob, he has a gun at the waist

Setting:
An apartment. On centerstage is a sofa and in front of it is a small coffee table. There is a TV on the right side of the stage, opposite to it is a dining table for two. There is a lighter on the coffee table, a foil under it and a burnt spoon. The room is a mess, the floor is not swept, shirts and pants are scattered. The main door to the apartment is at the right side and a window behind the TV.

SCENE: In a dim street in Quezon Blvd. Dina is leaning her back on the wall while standing. Lando, smoking a cigarette, approaches her.

LANDO: [faces Dina] So, are you okay?

DINA: A bit cold.

LANDO: [looks at his watch] It’s 11:48. [touches Dina’s forehead]

DINA: Don’t worry, I’ll be fine. You know my stamina is strong.

LANDO: Have you slept well?

DINA: Two hours or three.

LANDO: You’ll make it through this night?

DINA: You bet, I can. [LANDO throws the used cigarette on the floor, gets a new one from his pocket, and lights it] So, what happens uptown?

Mommy, Ipinatawag Ka!

Guro, lalake, 23, payat, Religion teacher.
Mommy, 39, manikurista na liberated at matalino.

Lugar:
Ang guro ay naghihintay sa Prefect of Discipline’s office. Siya ay nakaupo sa harap ng kanyang mesa. May crucifix sa nakasabit sa dingding at bookshelf sa kaliwa ng mesa.

Mother: (sisilip sa opisina) Ay! Ang cute! (lalapit sa guro at sisikaping maging pormal) Teacher, ano ba ang problema ng anak ko? Diyos ko! Nagmamadali pa naman akong pumunta dito, yung mga customers ko, iniwan ko pang basa ang mga kuko.

Teacher: Good afternoon, Mrs. de los Santos.

Mother: Ms. na lang po. Teacher,ano nang nangyari sa anak ko? mababa ba ang grades niya? Natutulog ba siya sa klase? Binubully ba siya o siya ang binu-bully? Binugbog mo ba siya o ikaw ang binugbog niya?

Teacher: Ma’am, relax lang po. Ahm…sit down, please. Can I offer you something? Coffee? Orange juice…

Mother: (Uupo) Masyadong pambata ang juice. Beer. Pwede ba ang beer dito? Ay! Oo. CATHOLIC SCHOOL. Sige, iced tea na lang (kukuha ang guro ng baso) Teacher! With ice.

Customer: 17 year-old girl
Saleslady: in her early 20’s

Setting: Shoe section of a department store. There is a life-sized mirror beside a bench. A cashier is located two meters away from the bench.

(Ang customer naga tan-aw sa mga naka-display.)

Customer: I’m gonna buy this na talaga! My friends also told me na this is so bagay sa gown ko. Gosh! I am gonna be the most beautiful debutante, ever! (Mitawag sa saleslady sa iyang tapad) Get a new pair of this sandal nga. I don’t like to try this, baka marami na kasing sumukat nito.

Saleslady: (Pugos nga ni ngisi) Okay ma’am. Hulat lang sa kadali ma’am ha. Tan-awon sa nako sa stock room.

Customer: Don’t make tagal-tagal ha. Ayaw ko ng pinapahintay.

(Nihawa ang saleslady. Naglingkod ang customer ug gikuha sa bag ang iyang press powder. Gibutang niya ang bag sa iyang tapad. Sige na tan-aw ang customer sa iyang relo kay dugay niabot ang saleslady.)

In a cafeteria two recent friends meet by chance. Ringgo, who is hard of hearing, has his hearing aid disconnected from his ear. Jords is a ‘ngo-ngo’ who seems to be confident in conversations despite his condition. He is waiting for his new girlfriend, Magda.

Ringgo: (sees Jords from afar and approaches him) Oy! Musta na man ka pre?

Jords: Aw, oki ra kaayo.

Ringgo: Abi ko’g wa na ka’y problema?

Jords: Mao gani. Wala na ko’y problema.

Ringgo: Unsa lagi tong problema preng?

Jords: Wala uy. Amaw.

Ringgo: Unsa man pud latest na balita sa imoha preng?

Jords: Mao japon, trabaho, trabaho.

Ringgo: Kinsa’y kamangon bay?

Jords: Samuka ba! Tarong ba!

Ringgo: Aw. Lamokon bitaw diri bay.

Jords: Wala’y lamok uy. Aircon man diri sa cafeteria. Mag-sige ra pud ka’g agree.
