The Ateneo de Davao Writers Workshop will be held at Room C301, Ateneo de Davao University from 27-31 May 2013.

Distinguished writers such as Macario Tiu, Don Pagusara and Jhoanna Cruz are the panelists. They will also share their expertise during the craft lectures. Dominique Cimafranca, Rhodora Ranalan and Hazel Hamile, Creative Writing and Literature teachers of the university, will sit as guest panelists.

The keynote speaker for this year is a renowned Filipino poet and Professor Merlie M. Alunan from the University of Visayas in Tacloban City, who will also launch a book during the workshop at the Ateneo de Davao University.

The workshop welcomes a number of observers who wish to learn the craft of writing.

Book Launch of "Pagdakop sa Bulalakaw"

pagdakop inviteAteneo de Davao University will host the book launch for Visayan poet Merlie Alunan’s latest collection of poetry, “Pagdakop sa Bulalakaw ug uban pang mga balak”, on May 29 (Wednesday) at its Jacinto Campus.

Alunan, a highly-respected writer in Philippine literary circles, is a professor at the UP College-Tacloban as well as an associate of the UP Institute of Creative Writing. She has received numerous awards for her writing including multiple Palanca Awards, the National Book Award, Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas, and the Thornton Award, among many others.

“Pagdakop sa Bulalakaw” is Alunan’s fourth book of poetry, and the first written in her mother tongue. The poems in this collection were originally conceived and written in Cebuano, then translated by Alunan herself into English. A few poems have also been translated into Waray. The book is published by the Ateneo de Manila University Press.

The launch of “Pagdakop sa Bulalakaw” starts 3:00PM at the F-705 Finster Building of Ateneo de Davao. Davao writers Dr. Macario D. Tiu of the Philippine Women’s College and Nino Soria de Veyra of UP Mindanao will present their reviews of the book. Alunan will be on hand for book signing after the event.

“Pagdakop sa Bulalakaw” retails for P450, but will be available at special discounted price of P400 during the launch.

Ateneo de Davao University Writers Workshop 2012

Ateneo de Davao University will hold its AdDU Writers Workshop 2012 from May 21 to May 25 at the university’s Jacinto Campus. The workshop is designed to reach out to young writers of Davao City, help them grow in their craft, and lead them to publication in order to give voice to the Mindanao youth. While geared primarily to students of Ateneo de Davao, the workshop also brings in guests from other schools in Davao.

Panelists for the workshop are Dr. Ricardo M. de Ungria (UP-M), Dr. Macario Tiu (PWC), Prof. Jhoanna Lynn Cruz (UP-M), and Don Pagusara, all of the Davao Writers Guild. Workshop director is Dominique Gerald Cimafranca.

Opening ceremonies for the workshop will be at 9:30AM on Monday, May 21, at F513 of the Finster Building of the Ateneo de Davao University. Mrs. Aida Rivera-Ford, founder of the Ford Academy of the Arts and former chair of the Humanities Division of Ateneo de Davao, will be the keynote speaker during the opening ceremonies.

The workshop is an annual event funded entirely by Ateneo de Davao University. It is held with the assistance of the Davao Writers Guild.

DWG launches book of genre short stories

The Davao Writers Guild, together with the National Commission or Culture and the Arts and the Humanities Division of Ateneo de Davao University, will hold the book launch of Dom Cimafranca’s “An Unusual Treatment and other short stories” on February 17, 2012, from 4:00PM to 5:00PM, at the Alumni Hall of Ateneo de Davao University.

“An Unusual Treatment” is a collection of Cimafranca’s short stories previously published in Philippines Graphic, Philippine Genre Stories, Philippine Speculative Fiction, and other magazines and anthologies. Edited by Dr. Ricardo M. de Ungria, the collection consists of genre stories of fantasy, horror, science fiction, and crime. This is Cimafranca’s first book of fiction.

“An Unusual Treatment” was published under the Davao Writers Guild’s Tubao Book Series, under a grant from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. The Tubao Book Series aims to promote Mindanao’s unique literature by featuring writers from the region.

The 1st Satur Apoyon Fiction-Writing Contest

The 1st Satur P. Apoyon Tigi sa Mubong Sugilanong Binisaya now open for submissions.

Fiction writers in Bisaya who are residents of Mindanao are invited to join the Satur P. Apoyon Tigi sa Mubong Sugilanong Binisaya. In the past two years, this contest was known as the Fiction Writing in Bisaya contest. This year, the Guild decided to rename the contest henceforth in honor of one of its founding members, Satur P. Apoyon, who recently passed away.

The deadline for submission is September 15, 2011. Cash prizes are as follows: first prize, P10,000.00; second prize, P7,000.00; third prize, P5,000.00.

Each contestant is allowed only one (1) entry. The story should be original (written by the contestant), unpublished (not printed in any newspaper, magazine or book), must not have won any awards. It must be printed between 10 to 20 pages in length (double-space, using Letter-size paper, using Times New Roman, 12pts). Participants are advised to comply with the instructions. Non-compliant entries will be automatically disqualified. A hard copy of the entry should be delivered to the following address: Rene Estremera, UP Mindanao, Mintal, Davao City 8022.

The envelope should contain the following: The contest entry; a separate sheet attesting to the authorship and no-publication/no-award of the work; and author’s complete contact information, signed by the author. A soft copy should be sent by email to davaowritersguild-at-yahoo-dot-com-dot-ph.

The criteria for judging are: Language (25%), Technique (25%), Relevance (25%), and Overall Impact (25%). Winners will be notified by cellphone and email.

The contest is a project of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Davao Writers Guild.
